South Africa

South Africa is located, as one might expect, on the southern tip of Africa. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the west, the Indian Ocean on the south and east. Along its northern border, from west to east, lie Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe, and to the northeast are Mozambique and Swaziland. Wholly-enclosed by South Africa, and situated in its eastern central plain, is the independent kingdom of Lesotho.

Almost all of South Africa's 472,000 square miles (1.2 million sq. km.) lie below the Tropic of Capricorn.

In the northeast, the highveld plateau descends to the Bushveld and Limpopo River basin. The Bushveld comprises South Africa's extensive savanna, in which is found the country's marvelously rich and diverse game reserve, the world-renowned Kruger National Park.

Kruger National Park

The National Park was opened in 1898 at the instigation of then-president Paul Kruger. After hunters had considerably decimated the originally rich game stock, all the land between the Sabie and the Crocodile Rivers was put under the protection of Nature Conservation to ensure the survival of the remaining animals. Only as recently as 1961 was the extended Kruger Park fenced in.

The park stretches from the Crocodile River in the south up to the Limpopo River in the north, which is the international border in the north. Altogether it is 350 km long, 65 km wide and comprises an area of about 20,000 sq km.

A web of roads of 1863 kilometres leads through the National Park, 697 kms of them being tarred. For the visitor there are numerous differently equipped rest camps, most of them scenically positioned. Within the park boundaries, travel is only allowed between sunrise and sunset. After dark one has to stay in one of the fenced rest camps.

The Kruger National Park is bounded by Mozambique in the east, the Limpopo river in the north, the Limpopo and Mpumulanga provinces in the west and the Crocodile river in the south.

The main rivers, Crocodile, Sabie, Olifants have their sources in the Drakensberg mountains in the west and flow eastwards through the Kruger National Park to Mozambique.

The whole of the park is relatively flat and the underlying geology has given rise to a variety of soil types that in turn support different vegetation types.

Crocodile River Safaris use their own dedicated lodge in which to accommodate their clients.

In this way we are able to provide accommodation of a high standard.

The lodge is situated in a wilderness area of 1548 Hectares on the southern boundary of the Kruger National Park between Malelane and Komatipoort. On arrival at Kruger Mpumulanga International Airport a short forty minute drive on a good tar road followed by an even shorter ride through the bush in air-conditioned comfort will bring you to the lodge.

Here you will meet our staff and be provided with a "welcome drink".

Your bags will be conveyed to your room whilst you start your relaxing stay with us.

Accommodation

The style of the accommodation is typically an African rustic style to blend into the environment. This however does not prevent it from being stylish and extravagant.

The lodge accommodation has modern conveniences to make your stay as comfortable as possible. The bedrooms are luxuriously appointed with views of the African bushveld. A comfortable bed with crispy clean linen awaits you at bedtime.

The modern bathrooms enable you to wash away the dust of the exciting and enjoyable day.

Large windows in the lounge and dining areas offer beautiful views of the African bush and animals drinking at the waterhole or wallowing in the mud or grazing on the front lawn.

Sit beside the crystal clear splash pool in the sunshine whilst sipping an ice cold drink. These facilities all provide an ideal environment in which to relax, unwind and savour the tranquility of Africa and listen to the myriad of sounds that surround you.

In the heat of the day it is time to relax for a while. You may like to sit in the cool of the lounge, take advantage of the peace and quiet and read a book or take a nap before the afternoon game drive.

As evening falls, sit overlooking the river and watch the beautiful African sunsets, whilst sipping a sundowner drink before dinner. The bird calls fade away as the small cats start their nightly prowl and the insect choir provides a unique accompaniment

If you are looking for bright flashing lights, hustle and bustle and noisy music then this is not the venue for you.

In the morning you will be woken by the singing of the birds and the aroma of freshly made coffee. It is time to be off on another adventure filled day in the African bush.

The animals you will see in the immediate area of the lodge are not domesticated or tame. They are wild animals that have adapted their way of life to cater for the close proximity of humans. Therefore, please do not approach them as they may take fright and in their haste to escape your unwanted attention they could injure you.

Your host will brief you in more detail on this during your "arrival briefing"
